Reaching Out

Reaching Out

By Qasim Zahid

You have support everywhere. Just tap in to the right channels.

You’ll be surprised just how effective a short text/call can be. Picture this. You’re sat at home. If you’re fortunate, you’ll be busy doing your work. What next after you’ve finished? Well, you and I both know that with the economy likely to continue its downturn, there will be a million things going through your mind. What is the market like? What’s the forecast like for the next 6 months, 1 year? How do I stay sharp? There is little time to sit and pontificate. Necessitating action is the only solution.

I’m not going to go over everything that you SHOULD or CAN do. This is simply about reaching out. Take the splinters off your own atomised existence. There are people who want to help you. In return, who knows, they may need help from you. Even better!

‘Ok, but why? What’s the purpose?’

2 reasons only. This is all you need to know.

Emotional Bank Account

There’s a reason why this is first. This is the most important reason. ‘The secret to success is emotional bank account’ in the words of Multi Millionaire Dan Pena. Reach out to get inspiration. For emotional support. Have someone hear out your problems. Of course, be careful about how much you say to people. With the ones you trust the most, be open. Tell them how you feel. For others, you don’t need to be as explicit. Knowing not what to say is just as important as knowing what to say. I would recommended friends and family only.

Focus
This is where your professional contacts will be of great help. Ask people how they are coping with work. Go on linkedIn and message contacts. Read articles and reach out to the author.

Ok, this is starting to sound generic. Here’s an action plan. Text (no emails, texts are personal) 10 people you work with or have worked with in the past. Ask each of them where they think the strongest areas of economic growth will be in 3 years? How are they keeping busy? Compile the information you have down on paper/online. Who knows, maybe you have the next GREAT idea from what you’ve written. Just thinking out loud.

This is just a start. This doesn’t so much as apply to people who are out of work. The action plan would be completely different.

We have a lot more content incoming in the weeks ahead. We can’t wait to discuss some ground breaking ideas. Watch this space!
