Trainee – having completed your degree, LPC, PGDL, you are now in your Training Contract, in 4 x 6 or 6 x 4 seats rotating.
Post Qualified Solicitor – the number of years’ of experience you have post qualification.
Associate – used interchangeably with qualified solicitor.
Senior Associate – promotion from Associate.
Principal Associate – promotion from Senior Associate.
Managing Associate – promotion from Principal Associate.

Of Counsel – a barrister with higher rights of audience or a solicitor with the same.
Legal director – a rung away from Partner. It can be a holding or developmental role, subject to the aspirations of the candidate.
Fixed Share Partner – a partner that he some equity points and then a fixed salary too.
Equity Partner – the holy grail! A fully fledged member of the LLP or partnership, where your income is all based on the firm’s performance with no fixed element, it being variable on how well the firm does. You will have to introduce capital to the LLP/partnership to buy into the equity. This is generally underwritten in the business as an interest free loan.
